Summary: The recreational vehicle industry was in a rut when President Barack Obama visited Elkhart in 2009, but it has gradually climbed out and is now on track for a record-breaking year. Obama gave a nod to the industry’s success on Wednesday during his speech at Concord High School in Elkhart. After alluding to how the unemployment rate in Elkhart County dropped from nearly 20 percent in 2009 to about 4 percent today, he credited the RV industry for playing a key role. “The auto industry just had its best year ever, and the RV capital of the world is doing its part. The industry is set to ship nearly 400,000 RVs this year, which will be an all-time record," Obama said.
