State Park Campers Say So Long to Summer

By JON BOWMAN, Reporter

Many of the State and Federal campgrounds in Colorado didn't open this last holiday weekend of the summer because of the pesky pine beetle.

The ones that did, were filled with campers, people rving and others seeking to celebrate this three-day weekend.

"We are from Anchorage, Alaska and are here at Cherry Creek State Park with 17 of our 19 grandchildren and five of our great-grandkids," said Mary Helfrich. "We have all the comforts of home here, including our washer and dryer."

Ms. Helfrich says they think rving is the way to go. "We went from Yuma to Denver, to Vancouver through Canada to Anchorage and back and only spent five thousand dollars for fuel. If we had flown it averages out to be about the same as if we would have flown."

Harold Beaird of Saxton, MO. says, "It sure beats waiting in security lines and standing in long lines."

He and his wife spent a week in Estes Park before heading into the Park. The RV industry indicate rentals are up 20% over last year with campgrounds across the country seeing a five percent increase over the same period. In fact, they call campgrounds the last small towns in America.
