RVIA Will Celebrate Coon’s Distinguished Career

RVIA will honor Richard Coon for his ten years of service as the association’s president during a special celebration on Sept. 29 at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah, GA during the Board the Director’s meeting.

The gala event will draw friends and colleagues from across the industry to salute Coon, who will retire from RVIA on Oct. 1. The evening, co-hosted by RVIA Chairman Derald Bontrager of Jayco, Inc., and former Chairman Jim Sheldon of Allied Recreation Group, will feature a video tribute as well as remarks from Garry Enyart with Cummins Power Generation, Gregg Fore with Dicor Corp., Doug Gaeddert with Forest River, Inc., Bruce Hertzke, formerly of Winnebago Industries; and Coon’s wife Susan.

“We are looking forward to a tremendous evening that will celebrate Richard’s impressive record of success as RVIA president,” said Bontrager. “The speakers we have lined up are friends who have worked with Richard for many years during his time at Onan and RVIA. They’ll have some interesting stories to share. We are going to honor Richard but also have some good-natured fun with him. I don’t think he would have it any other way.”

Coon announced his retirement during RVIA’s Annual Meeting in March. As RVIA president, Coon successfully steered RVIA through the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression and leaves the association in a strong financial position.  His key achievements include spearheading initiatives to expand and improve RV technician education, create global opportunities for RV manufacturers and suppliers, unify the North American RV market by harmonizing marketing efforts and RV standards between the United States and Canada, upgrade the RVing experience for customers, better relations with RV dealers and the campground industry, and welcome park model members back into RVIA.

Prior to joining RVIA as president in 2005, Coon enjoyed a 30-year career in the RV industry, including his role as director of RV business for Cummins Power Generation. He succeeded David Humphreys, who had held the position for three decades.

“Taking the position of RVIA president was one of the best decisions of my professional career,” said Coon. “RVIA is made up of a great group of volunteer members and a staff of dedicated employees who work so well together to promote the RV industry. It is going to be a terrific event to celebrate all that we have accomplished together.”
