RV Shipments Climb Through First Half of 2012

The RV market strengthened in the first half of 2012 with total RV wholesale shipments reaching 154,988 units through June, an increase of 7.6% over the 144,031 units shipped during the same time frame in 2011, according to RVIA’s June 2012 survey of manufacturers.

Towable RV shipments led the way as totals reached 140,412 units through June, an 8.6% gain over the same six-month time frame in 2011. Conventional travel trailers remained the largest volume category representing more than 60% of all RVs at 95,965 units. Fifth wheels represent nearly 1-in-4 with shipments of 35,532 units in the first six months of the year.

Meanwhile, motorhome shipments are off slightly, falling from 14,756 units shipped through June 2011 to 14,576 units through June 2012 (a 1.2% decline). Type A motorhomes have increased slightly, improving to 6,960 units, a gain of 0.2%. Type B motorhomes also reported better totals, rising by 7.1% to 1,066 units. Type C motorhomes are off by 3.8%, falling to 6,550 units.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, shipments through June were at an annualized rate of 270,000 units, which is tracking with the latest projection for 2012 shipments by Dr. Richard Curtin in the Summer 2012 issue of RV Roadsigns, RVIA’s quarterly forecast of RV deliveries to retailers. This total would be a gain of approximately 7% over 2011 and the industry’s highest annual total since 2007.
