RV Shipments Surge in August

RV wholesale shipments surged August, increasing 15.7% ahead of the same month last year to 24,460 units, the strongest August monthly total in five years.  Shipments of all towable RVs were up 14.6% but it was motorhomes which grew the most, improving 27.3% over a year earlier totals, according to RVIA’s latest survey of RV manufacturers.

Total year-to-date RV shipments stand at 202,305 units, a 10.5% rise over the 183,110 units shipped through August of last year. All RV product categories except folding camping trailers have improved this year, with conventional travel trailers growing by the most units while truck campers have grown by the largest percentage gain.

Seasonally adjusted, the August total represents an annualized pace of more than 276,600 units.

The continued steady performance of the RV market through the first eight months of 2012 is tracking with the year-end industry projections made by Dr. Richard Curtin in the Fall 2012 issue of RV Roadsigns, RVIA’s quarterly forecasting newsletter.  Dr. Curtin expects RV shipments to sustain moderate growth to reach 273,600 units by year end, a gain of 8.4% over 2011 and the highest annual total since 2007.
