RV Shipments Up 12% Through August

RV wholesale shipments to retailers tracked by RVIA continue to trend upward with year-to-date shipments rising to 226,125 units through August, an 11.8% gain over the same time period last year.

Motorhome shipments have been robust, rising 35% to 25,624 units through August 2013 compared to 18,986 units through August 2012. Type C motorhomes have increased 42.8% to 11,772 units; type A motorhomes have grown by 33% to 12,399 units; and type B motorhomes have edged up by 2.2% to 1,453 units.

Towable RV shipments are up 9.4% to 200,501 units through the first eight months of the year. Conventional travel trailers are up 11.4% to 140,318 units; fifth wheel travel trailers have risen by 6.6% to 49,242 units; and truck campers are up 1% to 2,466 units. Folding camping trailers are off slightly (-3.3%) to 8,475 units.

The rise in RV shipments tracks with the latest projections for the market in RVIA’s Fall 2013 issue of RV Roadsigns, the association’s quarterly forecasting newsletter compiled by Dr. Richard Curtin of the University of Michigan. Wholesale RV shipments are expected to reach 319,300 units by the end of 2013, a gain of 11.7% above the 2012 total of 285,800. Shipments will continue to move higher in 2014 to 334,300 units, a 4.7% rise over the projected 2013 year-end total.
