Sixth Annual Advocacy Day a Success

RVIA’s Advocacy Day was a huge success this year, with the largest member turnout in the history of the event. Thirty-two RVIA members participated in the June 11 event in Washington, D.C. -  ten more than last year’s event. This year fifty meetings with Members of Congress or Congressional staff were scheduled, and a record 17 of those meetings were with the Senators or Representatives themselves.

The day earned praise from those who participated. Derald Bontrager, president and COO of Jayco, said, “I was very pleased with the way RVIA organized Advocacy Day and the number of meetings that were arranged. The level of interest that the Members of Congress and the legislative staff showed was encouraging. Especially interesting were the many questions we fielded about the impact of rising fuel costs on our industry.” He continued,  “Advocacy Day was a great experience and I am looking forward to participating again next year.”

Ken Neil, Customer Relations Manager for Tiffin Motor Homes Inc., said, “RVIA did a great job with the event this year. We were able to talk to Congressional staff directly about issues of concern to the industry and their interest in what we had to say was encouraging. I was pleased with the day.”

Members of Congress and their staffs were generally very interested in talking to RVIA members and receptive to the issues that were discussed. Many discussions focused on the impact that proposed new CAFE standards would have on the industry. Representatives Baron Hill of Indiana, Lee Terry from Nebraska, as well as Senator Mike Crapo from Idaho signed letters to send to the Department of Transportation concerning CAFE standards and its effects on the industry.

RVIA arranged for two RVs from the association’s vehicle loan program to be displayed on both the House and Senate sides of Capitol Hill for tours and to promote the RV industry and lifestyle. The displays attracted crowds this year, including five House Members, one Senator and countless staff. The turnout at the displays far surpassed last year and got many on Capitol Hill excited about RVing.
