RV Industry Scores Legislative Wins in Iowa and Indiana

RVIA’s Government Affairs department notched two legislative achievements recently as state legislatures across the country adjourned for the year.

In Iowa, RVIA worked with the state’s RV dealers, Winnebago Industries and the Department of Transportation to pass legislation setting the allowable length of fifth-wheel travel trailers to 45 feet.  Previously, the state would not allow fifth-wheels over 40 feet to be registered.  This ruling also applies to travel trailers as fifth-wheels are classified as a type of travel trailer in the Iowa statutes.  The legislation became effective July 1.

In Indiana, Gov. Mike Pence has signed legislation, which was effective immediately, that states that an individual is not required to hold a chauffeur’s license in order to transport an RV prior to the first retail sale of the RV if the gross vehicle weight of the RV is between 16,000 and 26,000 pounds or if the gross combination weight of the RV and towing vehicle is between 16,000 and 26,000 pounds, including a towed RV with a gross weight rating of not more than 10,000 pounds.

The Indiana Manufactured Housing Association-Recreation Vehicle Indiana Council (IMHA-RVIC) took a leadership role in introducing and shepherding the bill to passage with the help of RVIA and RVDA.

“Mark Bowersox and his staff at IMHA-RVIC did a terrific job in passing this legislation. This new exemption in Indiana will help spur job growth in the RV industry by cutting through bureaucratic red tape to eliminate the need for a chauffeur’s license while transporting RVs,” said RVIA’s Dianne Farrell, vice president of government affairs. “It will also create another uptick in the number of potential drivers eligible to transport RVs, helping move product to dealers and into the hands of consumers more efficiently.”
