Upcoming Meetings To Focus On Harmonizing U.S., Canadian RV Standards

The effort to harmonize United States’ and Canadian RV safety standards into one single North American standard continues with two key meetings taking place this spring where code change proposals to attain this goal will be considered.

The CSA Z240 Technical Committee, which governs Canada’s RV standards program, will meet April 30 – May 1 in Toronto, Canada to review approximately 50 code change proposals to the Z240 program.  That session will be followed by a meeting of the NFPA Technical Committee on RVs from May 22 – 24 in Seattle, WA where over 100 suggested code changes to the NFPA 1192 standard will be discussed.

The code change proposals that will be considered at the meetings were developed by a joint Ad Hoc Committee, composed of members of the CSA Z240 Technical Committee and the NFPA Technical Committee on RVs, during a meeting in March.  Members of this group, including Monaco RV's Jerome Hoover, Forest River’s Jeff Christner, Thor’s David Mihalick, and RVIA's Kent Perkins will take part in the upcoming meetings.

The two groups are working toward publishing harmonized requirements in the 2014 editions of both the CSA Z240 and ANSI 1192 standards with a single CSA/NFPA documents with both designations potentially published in the 2017 cycle.

In other RVIA Standards news:

•    RVIA’s inspection staff will gather the week of May 7 at the association’s Reston, VA headquarters for their bi-annual meeting. These meetings are designed to maintain and improve consistency in RVIA’s inspection program. Specifically, staff will review the 2011 Handbook Update #2-11 program positions that were published in March and discuss other issues that have surfaced since the last meeting in November 2011.

“The primary purpose in getting the inspection team together is to make sure we are applying the standards and respective enforcement positions uniformly, with an additional emphasis on becoming effective educators while conducting these in-depth monitoring inspections,” said Kent Perkins, RVIA’s director of standards.

•   RVIA also advises that the deadline for submitting code change proposals for the 2014 edition of the ANSI/RVIA 12-volt standard – Low Voltage Electrical Systems in RVs is May 25, 2012. Anyone interested in submitting a code change proposal(s), should refer to RVIA Standards News Bulletin SNB-16/11 posted on the website or contact RVIA’s Kent Perkins at
