Industry Leaders Honored at RVIA’s Committee Week

RVIA presented Rep. Steve Bucshon (R-IN), Garett Carolus of Keystone RV, and Tom Ryan of the D & R Agency with association awards at Committee Week 2013, held June 2 – 6, 2013 at the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C.

The National Legislative Award was presented to Rep. Bucshon, who represents Indiana’s 8th district, for his efforts in working with the RV industry to sponsor an mendment to the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) legislation to revise the federal bridge formula to permit motorhomes to carry up to 24,000 lbs. on a single axle. Previous House and Senate versions of the bill did not include the RV technical change.

“Through his diligence and hard work in the conference committee, the final highway bill included the much needed motorhome amendment,” said RVIA Chairman Doug Gaeddert in presenting the award at a special reception. “This was great news for a motorhome industry that was hit hard by the lagging economy and was just starting to recover.  Thanks to his efforts, RV manufacturers can build motorhomes that are more affordable for consumers.”

Carolus received the National Education Service Award, which recognizes those who have been instrumental in the development of educational programs in the RV industry. He has served as a member of the RVIA Industry Education Committee and the Industry Education Technical Subcommittee while also  providing his expertise and insight over the years on several committees charged with developing RV service technician curriculums and textbooks. He has also volunteered as instructor for Consumer Relations, Propane, PDI and Preventative Maintenance Classes over the past five years at Trouble Shooter Clinics.

“In his work with RVIA and Keystone, Garett has worked diligently to enhance and provide service technician training, and other educational programs to the RV industry, while constantly promoting the RVDA/RVIA Certification program,” said Gaeddert in presenting the award at the Joint Committee Luncheon on June 3.

The Distinguished Achievement in RV Standards was presented to Ryan. It honors those who contribute to the enhancement of RV standards in the industry.

Ryan has been actively engaged within the RVIA Standards program activities for many years, serving as a member of the Standards Steering Committee since 1996 and on several standards subcommittees, including the Electrical Technical Subcommittee where he served as chair for 6 years; the Plumbing Technical Subcommittee; the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee; and the Technical Subcommittee on CAN and Lonworks. He also has worked on the ANSI/RVIA Engine Generator Standard Canvass, ANSI/RVIA 12V Canvass, and the RV Electrical System textbook review committee.

“It is an honor to recognize Tom with this award in recognition of his dedication to serve and assist in the development of the standards and policies that help our industry build safer RVs,” said Gaeddert in presenting the award at the Standards Steering Committee on June 4.
