RVIA Keeps Member Costs in Check, Approves Lower Budget for FY09

The RVIA Board of Directors approved a budget of $12.8 million for fiscal year 2009 that holds the line on membership costs, including dues, show space rates and seal fees, during their meeting on September 13 in Charleston, S.C.

Faced with declining revenue projections for the upcoming year, RVIA will draw on reserve funds and make nearly $1.3 million in program and staffing cuts in the fiscal year 2009 budget, which will be almost 10 percent lower than the $14.1 million spent in fiscal year 2008.

“Our staff, Executive Committee and Board of Directors worked extremely hard to develop a budget that does not increase our members’ costs but continues to provide them with the core high quality programs and services they have come to expect from their association,” said RVIA President Richard Coon. “Unfortunately this process required us to make some very, very difficult choices, especially in terms of staffing. We are losing ten talented, long-time employees who were dedicated to RVIA and the industry.  We appreciate their service and wish them all the best as we all move forward.”

In other actions, the RVIA Board :

  • Directed RVIA staff to work with the American Recreation Coalition to arrange meetings with automobile manufacturers to learn about their future tow product plans and educate them on the RV and outdoor recreation industry’s towing needs.

  • Moved that chairmen of RVIA committees serve a maximum of six years with preference being given to members of the Board of Directors to serve in that capacity. For sitting chairs, the time period will begin on October 1, 2008.

  • Scheduled RVIA’s next round of strategic planning to take place this January in Tampa in conjunction with FRVTA’s Florida RV Supershow.

  • Recommended that Go RVing conduct strategic planning to determine its direction for the next three years with a focus on budget, recommended RVIA assessment levels, marketing strategies, and media messages.

  • Appointed Jeff Hanemaayer, chairman of Roadtrek Motorhomes, to serve on the Board as an At-Large representative until the next association elections in August 2009.
