RV Shipments Continue Steady Growth

RV wholesale shipments to dealers rose to 37,600 units through the first two months of the year, a five percent increase over the 35,900 units shipped in the same time period the year prior, with both motorhome and towable categories showing increases.

Motorhome shipments are up with 4,100 units shipped through the first part of 2011, a 17% increase over the 3,500 units shipped last year.  Meanwhile, towable RV shipments have grown to 33,500 units in 2011 from 32,400 units in 2010, an increase of just over three percent.

The steady growth of the RV market through February coincides with the latest industry projections from University of Michigan economist Dr. Richard Curtin. In the Spring 2011 issue of RV Roadsigns, he predicted RV shipments would reach 263,100 units this year, an increase of nearly nine percent over the 242,300 units shipped in 2010.

Curtin noted that this is a sustainable growth path that mainly reflects improved retail sales at RV dealerships aided by an improving economy, the extension of income tax cuts, and the reduction in payroll taxes.
