RV Shipments Up Through 3rd Quarter

The RV market continued to strengthen through the third quarter of 2012 with total RV wholesale shipments rising to 221,281 units through September, a gain of nearly 11 percent (10.7%) over the same time period in 2011.

Travel trailer shipments have grown by 16,446 units through the nine-month period (a 13.6% rise) – from 120,784 units in 2011 to 137,230 units in 2012 – and continue to command the largest unit volume of all vehicle types. Fifth wheel travel trailers have jumped by 8.5% from 46,882 units to 50,868 units. Truck campers have shown the largest percentage gain, growing by 20.2% from 2,257 units to 2,713 units. Folding camping trailers are off, falling 7.8% from 10,001 units to 9,216 units.

All segments of the motorhome market saw gains. Type A motorhomes increased by 7.3% from 9,916 units shipped through September 2011 to 10,635 units through September 2012. Type C motorhomes saw a gain of 385 units (4.5%) from 8,612 units to 8,997 units; while type B motorhomes rose from 1,495 units to 1,622 units on an 8.5% increase.

The continued steady performance of the RV market through the first nine months of 2012 is tracking with the year-end industry projections made by Dr. Richard Curtin in the Fall 2012 issue of RV Roadsigns, RVIA’s quarterly forecasting newsletter. Dr. Curtin expects RV shipments to sustain moderate growth to reach 273,600 units by year end, a gain of 8.4% over 2011 and the highest annual total since 2007.
