RV Shipments Rise 13% in First Six Months of 2013

Reston, VA — America’s wholesale recreation vehicle (RV) shipments rose 12.8% in the first six months of 2013 on the strength of improved consumer confidence, and strong response to affordable and innovative new RVs, according to market data collected by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).

Shipments for all of 2013 are projected to total 309,800 units, an increase of 8.4% from 2012. This growth projects to an 87% increase from the RV industry’s recession low in 2009, and would mark the first time shipments surpassed 300,000 units since 2007.  Shipments in 2014 are predicted to rise another 4% from the 2013 total.

“RVs give families an affordable, flexible and comfortable way to relieve the stress of daily life, and to share fun activities that create indelible memories and strengthen family ties,” said RVIA President Richard Coon. “The recession changed how many Americans think about their finances. RV manufacturers responded with products that offer the right mix of size, comforts and price that solidified RVs as an ideal way for families to travel.”

While the industry has seen growth in both towable and motorized categories, motorhome shipments are up 33.3% in the first half of 2013. The travel trailer category, comprising nearly 90% of all RV shipments in recent years, is up 10.7%.

Included among the many new products offered by RV manufacturers are smaller, lighter vehicles that provide better fuel efficiency. Many of  these  are designed to be towed by minivans or crossover SUVs.

Today’s RVs are full of functionality and technology. Many offer gourmet and outdoor kitchens, well-appointed bathrooms, expandable floor plans and layouts that allow for multi-function uses, and state-of-the-art electronics.

“More than 20 million Americans will take RV vacations this year because of the freedom and flexibility RVs provide when traveling,” said Coon. “There’s no better way to save money, see more of the country and spend time with friends and family.”
