RV Industry Association Establishes Grounding Monitor Interrupter Task Force

With the new Grounding Monitor Interrupter (GMI) NEC requirement taking effect next year for 2028 model-year RVs, the RV Industry Association has joined together with all segments of the industry to create a GMI Task Force.  This task force is comprised of national and state RV park and campground industry associations, RV park and campground operators, RV manufacturers and suppliers, RV dealers, and electrical experts. The purpose of this task force is to coordinate GMI communication and education to the entire industry. The task force wants to ensure that all segments of the industry:

• Understand what the GMI is;
• Prepare for GMI-equipped units; 
• Know how it protects the consumer; and 
• Know how to respond if a GMI device shuts off the power to the RV. 

As part of these efforts, the GMI Task Force just released a one-pager for campgrounds on how to prepare for GMI-equipped RVs, along with a GMI landing page that includes helpful information about GMI for the industry. In addition to information for the campgrounds, this landing page will be updated with information for dealers and manufacturers as well as when any new information becomes available. 

The very first step that manufacturers, dealers, service centers, and campgrounds all need to take is to test their electrical systems wherever a GMI-equipped RV may plug in. This step is critical to being prepared for GMI-equipped RVs, since GMI devices are designed to test the receptacle that it is plugged into to ensure it is wired correctly and has a proper ground connection. If this step is not taken, your facility may not be able to power GMI-equipped RVs.
