Preparing Dealerships for Grounding Monitor Interrupters: Resources Now Available
Starting with Model Year 2028 (available in 2027), new RVs will have Grounding Monitor Interrupters (GMIs). Regardless of where an RV is plugged in (dealership, campground, etc.), if the electrical power source has unaddressed grounding issues, a GMI-equipped RV will not accept power, and everything in that RV that requires such power will either not turn on if the electrical issue is detected prior to operation or shut off if the electrical issue is detected while in operation. Whether plugging units into lot pedestals, service bays, or conducting pre-delivery inspections (PDIs), compromised power supplies can prevent units from receiving shore power.
To help dealerships navigate this transition smoothly, the RV Industry Association and the cross-industry GMI Task Force—in partnership with the RV Dealers Association (RVDA)—have launched a dedicated resource hub at rvia.org/GMI.
Available resources tailored for dealers include:
- Dealer One-Pager: A quick-reference operational guide outlining critical GMI fundamentals and dealership preparation steps.
- Technical Backgrounders: Detailed overviews of NEC enforcement timelines, GMI functionality, and how devices address issues like damaged power cords and improper adapters.
- Testing & Inspection Guidance: Recommended protocols and best practices for evaluating dealership electrical receptacles and working with licensed electricians to eliminate grounding faults before units arrive.
The GMI landing page also has information for RV parks and campgrounds and will continue to be updated with additional information for OEMs and consumers.
