RV Industry Association Board of Directors Approves Program Requirement Addressing Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems
On March 10, 2026, the RV Industry Association Board of Directors approved a Motion implementing a requirement for Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) to be included on all towable RVs at the start of each manufacturer’s respective model year 2028 production.
Background
While the Standards Steering Committee (“SSC”) previously approved Public Inputs regarding Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (“TPMS”) for the 2029 edition of the NFPA 1192 Standard for Recreational Vehicles, it also recommended an early adoption and implementation of Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (in advance of the 2029 standard update) for towable products under 26,000 pounds GVWR beginning with model year 2028. This program requirement will go into effect during the 2027 calendar year, as industry members begin construction of model year 2028 towable RVs.
Rather than establish a single, uniform enforcement date applicable to the entire industry, the Standards Steering Committee and the Standards and Inspection Departments agree that having each manufacturer implement Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems installation at the start of their respective MY 2028 production process will ensure that all units in that model year are so equipped. By monitoring VIN numbers during inspections and engaging in clear communications with manufacturer members on model year changeovers, RV Industry Association inspectors will be able to accurately review compliance with the program requirement during normal inspection visits in 2027.
Below are the two Public Inputs for the TPMS requirement for the 2029 Edition of the NFPA 1192.
- 8.4.X Towable recreational vehicles shall have a Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring System (TPMS) installed in accordance with SAE J3309 Surface Vehicle Recommended Practice, Tire Pressure and Temperature Monitoring Systems for Trailers under 26,000 Pounds GVWR.
- Definition: 3.3.X TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) A tire pressure system fitted to a vehicle which (1) senses pressure directly or indirectly, or able to evaluate the variation of pressure over time, (2) does not restore the measured pressure to its specified level, and (3) signals when the threshold(s) has (have) been exceeded and passes this information along to the driver.
