Alphabet Soup: A Guide To RV Acronyms

Spend some time in an RV manufacturing plant, at an RV industry event, or hang around the RV standards and inspection team too long, and you’re bound to hear a few acronyms that might get you scratching your head. Throw in a chat with the government affairs team and you could really be confused. One might even say the RV industry has its own slang. If you’re as confused as we are sometimes, check out what these abbreviations mean:

ANSI: American National Standard Institute is a non-profit association that establishes procedures and guidelines to create recognized minimum safety standards for products used by both consumers and industry. The RV Industry Association is an ANSI accredited standards developer.

CAN: Control Area Network, related to RV-C (see below)

EGS-1: Engine Generator Sets for RV Safety Requirements Standard

EXTLAD-1: Recommended Practice Laboratory Test Procedures for Exterior Ladders on Recreational Vehicles Standard

FMVSS: Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards

GA: Government Affairs

GAOA: Great American Outdoors Act, a historic piece of legislation that invests $9.5 billion in public lands, including modernizing campgrounds

HUD Rule: Department of Housing and Urban Development rule the exempts RVs from manufactured housing standards

NEC: National Electrical Code which has specific article that address electrical systems for both traditional RVs, park model RVs, and RV parks and campgrounds

NFPA: National Fire Protection Association, the NFPA 1192 Standard for RVs has been adopted by RV Industry Association’s Board of Directors for the construction of RVs

NHTSA: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

OREC: Office of Outdoor Recreation; offices within state government that promote the economic benefits of outdoor recreation activities

PMRV: Park Model RV

RVACT: RV Action Center, an online advocacy platform that allows people to contact their elected officials on industry issues

RV-C: A protocol language for appliances and devices within the RV which allows these products to communicate and cooperate

RVEC-1: Recommended Practice Testing Requirements of Exterior Components for RVs Standard

RVPAC: RV Political Action Committee

RVTAP: TV Trade Advisory Panel

SNB: Standards News Bulletin

TSIC-1: Recommended Practice Process Controls for Assembly of Wheels on Trailers
