Go RVing Highlights Homeschooling In An RV

Apr 4, 2022

The Go RVing PR team works with media outlets across the country to tell the real-life stories of RVers and introduce even more consumers to the RVing lifestyle. Recently, they worked with Keith and Tia Sims to learn more about how they homeschool their children when on the road and share that insight with an article in The Old Schoolhouse Magazine.

Homeschooling in an RV allows us to stop and experience whatever we are studying; it has enough space for everything we want to bring and acts as a classroom while we travel to our destination. The kids have room to spread out, and we rarely ever hear, “Are we there yet?”

One of the best times to do schoolwork is while we’re traveling. Tia uses a website called Homeschool Planner to schedule all the lessons and assignments for the boys. The planner allows for flexibility and adjustments to the entire calendar or just slight changes. No matter where we travel, we always look for opportunities to teach the boys. A simple trip to the supermarket can turn into a math lesson. When we’re on the road, we are teaching them about the different road signs and their meanings. They are learning how to read maps and not just follow GPS. We share our favorite music and the music that our parents loved. Hiking provides endless chances to teach them about wildlife, plants, and natural formations and lets them stretch and burn off some energy after a long ride.

Our kids love science, so we’ve studied geology by visiting some of the different parts of our home state of Georgia. Georgia has seven natural wonders, and one of our top two favorites is Providence Canyon, known as the Little Grand Canyon. This has both a geology and an astronomy program and plenty of hiking trails. The second is Tallulah Falls and Gorge. It’s a beautiful place to hike and see some gorgeous views as you walk across the suspension bridge.
