June Is Great Outdoors Month®

Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR) issued the following statement marking June as Great Outdoors Month®: 

"Great Outdoors Month® is a perfect opportunity to get outside and celebrate the joys of outdoor recreation in America. We have a bold opportunity to harness outdoor recreation not only as a driver of economic growth but also as a cornerstone of health, connection, and resilience. 

Outdoor Recreation Roundtable, representing the entire $1.3 trillion outdoor recreation economy, is proud to elevate the role of outdoor recreation during Great Outdoors Month® in supporting mental and physical health, driving economic growth, and supporting over 5 million jobs in every corner of the country.  

During Great Outdoors Month®, ORR is asking businesses and associations across the outdoor recreation economy to take the America’s Outdoor Era Commitment. At its core, this effort is simple: the outdoor recreation industry should take our own medicine and lead by example in making time outside a driver of America’s physical, mental, community, and economic health.

Since 1998, Presidents, Congress, and States have marked June as Great Outdoors Month®. This enduring commitment underscores the bipartisan momentum to advance a sustainable and growing outdoor recreation economy for the benefit of all Americans. ORR looks forward to elevating events and celebrations across the country throughout June."

Millions of people in all 50 states participate in Great Outdoors Month®, with thousands of events, each with their own rich history and festive crowds, and coordinated by partner organizations. Events include: 

• Kids to Parks Day – coordinated by the National Park Trust (May 23) 

• American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day® (June 6) 

• Fee-free day at U.S. Forest Service 

• National Fishing and Boating Week (June 6-14) 

• National Go RVing Day (June 13) – coordinated by Go RVing 

• Great Outdoors Day of Service – coordinated by The Corps Network (June 12) 

• Great American Campout – coordinated by the National Wildlife Federation 

• National Marina Days – coordinated by the Association of Marina Industries
